Active Minds at York
Active Minds at York is a new club dedicated to changing the perception of mental illness on campus. Active Minds began as a club at the University of Pennsylvania, by a junior whose brother committed suicide battling a mental illness. Shortly after, other universities took interest in the club and formed chapters on their campuses. In 2003, Active Minds became a non-profit organization. To date, there are 336 chapters across the Unites States and Canada. Active Minds is a unique organization. It is the only non-profit organization working to start a conversation on college campuses about mental illness, and to change the way it’s viewed.
The goals of Active Minds at York are to reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses so that all students will be encouraged to seek help if necessary, and to create awareness of the various resources on campus and in their community.
The last event of the year is on March 13, 2012 at 7pm in Calumet College room 100. At this event, the movie Little Miss Sunshine would be shown and during an intermission, stories of people who have/are battling mental illness would be read. There will also be games so people can destress and relax after a busy school year! As well, learn about an exciting event we are planning in the fall called Standing Up For Those Still Standing.
Please e-mail at activeminds.yorku@gmail.com if you can attend this event. We also welcome feedback and suggestions!
Come out and help change the conversation on mental health at York!
